Tax Deduction
Definition
An expense that reduces your taxable income, thereby lowering the amount of tax you owe. Common tax deductions for freelancers include home office expenses, internet and phone bills (business portion), professional development and courses, software subscriptions, travel and mileage, health insurance premiums (for self-employed individuals), and retirement contributions (SEP IRA, Solo 401k). Every $1,000 in deductions saves you roughly $250 to $400 in combined income and self-employment taxes depending on your bracket. Tracking deductions throughout the year in a spreadsheet prevents missed savings at tax time.
